Coffee ratio calculator

Start with what you know. Find the coffee or water weight for your next brew.

Which weight do you know?

1:R means 1 gram of coffee for every R grams of water. Both values must be greater than zero.

Coffee to water · 1:17.5 by mass

Water added is not the final drink yield. Results display up to two decimal places; very small weights may round to zero.

A starting point, not a rule

Presets use coffee-to-water mass ratios. Adjust the ratio for your coffee, brewer, and preference; check the brewer’s capacity before using a scaled recipe. All calculation happens in your browser, with no login or saved input.

Pour-over · 1:17.5

Blue Bottle’s pour-over guide gives 20–27 g coffee for 350 g water. This preset uses 20 g, the lower end of that range: 350 ÷ 20 = 17.5. Follow the full method →

French press / cafetière · about 1:15.45

Union’s French press guide gives 55 g coffee for 850 g water. The preset uses 850 ÷ 55 without rounding the underlying ratio; the displayed label is approximate. Follow the full method →

How the calculation works

Known coffee: water = coffee × R. Known water: coffee = water ÷ R. Water here means the water added to brew, not the beverage collected. Grounds retain some water, and this tool does not estimate final yield.
